You're Caught Between Two Versions of Yourself
You started this business to build something meaningful. To do work you're proud of. To lead people well.
But somewhere along the way, the pressure mounted:
• You've had to delegate more than feels comfortable, and you're not always sure what's actually happening once it leaves your hands
• Social media rewards a polished, always-growing story, so you post the wins and quietly sit with the parts that aren't working
• Competitors and peers seem to have it figured out, so you feel pressure to match a pace that may not fit your business
• Your team feels less like the close-knit group it used to be, because you're stretched too thin to lead the way you used to
The result? You've built two versions of yourself: the leader you set out to be, and the polished version you present online and at networking events.
The gap between them is exhausting. And it's growing.
This is what we call Authenticity Debt.
What is the Esse Quam Videri (EQV) Framework?
Esse Quam Videri is Latin for "to be, rather than to seem"—a principle from Cicero's De Amicitia (44 BCE) and North Carolina's state motto since 1893.
The EQV Framework is a practical operating system for authentic leadership. It doesn't just ask you to "be more authentic." It gives you:
✓ A diagnostic tool to identify which inauthenticity traps you're in (The Unicorn Syndrome, Performative Pivot, Wisdom Theater, or Extraction Mindset)
✓ A structured process to realign your values, actions, challenges, and strategies through the EQV Compass
✓ A measurement system to track your authenticity trajectory over time and see progress, not just judge yourself
✓ Proven practices from founders who've navigated this same tension
This isn't therapy. It's not philosophical navel-gazing. It's a systematic approach to building a company and a life you don't have to perform your way through.
EQV Framework
Leadership
with who you truly are
Built on Three Core Pillars
PILLAR 1: Value Alignment 🧭
Your actions must reflect your core values, not just what looks good on paper.
The Problem It Solves: Stated values become wallpaper under pressure.
How EQV Addresses It: Values Filter, Red Line Inventory, Quarterly Alignment Audits.
Real Example: Sarah* stopped quietly discounting her rates to keep clients happy and started pricing to match her actual costs. She lost one client and kept her margins, and her team's trust.
PILLAR 2: Transparent Action 💬
Your interactions and decisions should be honest and open, even when uncomfortable.
How EQV Addresses It: 48-Hour Disclosure Rule, No Spin Zone Meetings, Public/Private Differentiation.
Real Example: Marcus* told his team about a missed deadline the same day it happened instead of quietly extending it. The team rallied and fixed the underlying scheduling problem within a week.
PILLAR 3: Purposeful Growth 📈
Growth aligned with authentic potential, not external validation.
How EQV Addresses It: Hell Yes or No Framework, Sunday Night Test, Authentic Growth Metrics.
Real Example: Jasmine* turned down a large contract that would have required hiring faster than she trusted her systems to support. Staying focused earned her better long-term clients and a team that wasn't burned out by year's end.
* all of the examples are composites of real clients and are not specific individuals.

EQV Pre-Flight Diagnostic Assessment
This free diagnostic assessment helps leaders and founders identify which Inauthenticity Traps may be affecting their leadership.
By honestly assessing 15 key areas, you'll receive a personalized profile showing specific challenges and strategies to address through the EQV Compass Worksheet
Which Trap Are You In?
Most founders don't wake up and decide to be inauthentic. They get caught in patterns driven by external pressure and internal fear. We've identified four common traps:
TRAP 1: The Unicorn Syndrome 🦄
Inflating metrics, overstating traction. Hidden cost: culture of wishful thinking, eroded trust.
EQV Antidote: Truth Dashboard, 48-Hour Honesty Rule.
TRAP 2: The Performative Pivot 🎭
Jumping on trends not aligned with mission. Hidden cost: mission drift, team turnover.
EQV Antidote: Values Filter, Hell Yes or No.
TRAP 3: Wisdom Theater 🎪
Curated vulnerability publicly, hiding real struggles privately. Hidden cost: isolation, burnout.
EQV Antidote: 48-Hour Disclosure, No Spin Zone.
TRAP 4: The Extraction Mindset ⛏️
Transactional networking. Hidden cost: shallow relationships, loneliness.
EQV Antidote: Give First Principle, No-Agenda Check-Ins..
The EQV Framework uses a compass to help individuals and organizations find their authenticity.
The EQV Compass
The EQV Compass is a structured planning instrument at the heart of the EQV Framework's implementation phase. Once a leader has identified their active Inauthenticity Traps through the Pre-Flight Diagnostic and worked through the Three Pillars — Value Alignment, Transparent Action, and Purposeful Growth — the Compass translates that self-knowledge into a concrete, time-bound action plan.
What It Does
The Compass organizes your commitments across three time horizons: 30, 60, and 90 days. Each horizon is anchored to one or more of the Three Pillars, ensuring that every action you commit to is traceable back to a specific dimension of authentic leadership rather than a generic goal-setting exercise. The result is a personalized roadmap that is both aspirational and operationally grounded.
How It Works in the Process
The Compass sits at the pivot point between diagnosis and implementation — Step 6 of the 9-step EQV Process Flow. By the time a leader arrives at the Compass, they have already:
Named the traps pulling them toward inauthentic behavior
Established their values filter and red lines
Committed to transparency protocols and growth boundaries
The Compass captures all of that into a single, navigable document. It is revisited alongside the Trajectory Tracker each quarter, allowing leaders to recalibrate commitments as their organization evolves. Think of it less as a checklist and more as a living orientation device — one that keeps your decisions pointing toward who you are, not just where the market is pushing you.
